This painting shows Dr. Mix (his back is turned) seated, looking out over the Rock River from the rear of his North 3rd Street residence. A railed wooden deck overlooks the river and is set below the immediate yard of the property. A stone retaining wall separates the yard from the deck below. A dark brown tree trunk, with noticeable bare angular branches, grows in the foreground and overhangs the deck–shading the tufted grass growing near the wall. Dr. Mix is wearing a light-colored, boater-style hat with a dark band, and sitting on a slatted bench. His figure appears bulky—as though he is wearing an overcoat. Although he is the focus of the painting, Dr. Mix takes up very little space in the composition. Most of the canvas is devoted to the surrounding fall foliage in vibrant red and ochers. The surface of the river reflects the colorful trees, which make the water and the lower half of the sky appear pink.
