Code of Conduct

The Board of Trustees established the Code of Conduct to protect the rights and safety of Oregon Library patrons and staff, preserve and protect the Library’s resources and provide and atmosphere that is conducive to appropriate use of the Library and its services. All patrons are required to comply with the Code of Conduct while in the library and on Library property. Such behavior may result in an individual being restricted from the premises and of the use of library services for a period of time, or in arrest or persecution. Illinois law authorizes the OPL Board of Trustees to “exclude from the use of the library any person who willfully violates an ordinance or regulation prescribed by the Board.” (Illinois Compiled Statutes, 75 ILCS 16/30-55.60).

1. Any misconduct, inappropriate behavior, or hazardous physical condition that disturbs others or hinders them in their use of the library or library materials is prohibited.

2. Any behavior which is potentially dangerous, such as running in the library, is prohibited.

3. Patrons are required to dress appropriately and shoes be worn at all times.

4. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult caregiver. Please see our Unattended Children Policy for further information.

5. Please do not touch the art in the Eagle’s Nest Art Gallery. To avoid accidents, be aware of your surroundings and keep a safe distance from works of art, cases, and platforms at all times.

6. Eating in the library is prohibited except during library approved functions. Drinks with lids are allowed.

7. The use of tobacco products, e-cigarettes, marijuana, vaping or illegal drugs in the library or entryway is prohibited.

8. The library is not responsible for personal belongings left unattended.

9. The library reserves the right to inspect all bags, purses, briefcases, backpacks, etc. for library materials.

10. On-duty services animals and animals involved in Library programs are welcome. Pets and other animals are not allowed in the building.

11. Solicitation on library property is prohibited.

12. Theft or vandalism of library property will be prosecuted.

13. The violation of federal, state, or local ordinances occurring on library property will be prosecuted.
