This landscape highlights a bend in the river. The vantage is from above—looking down on the river. In the background, tree tops are visible in the haze near the horizon. The immediate foreground features dark green brush accented by dots of red foliage or berries. The steep bank on the right is enveloped by yellowish-green shrubbery. This was painted while Makielski was a student at the Art Institute of Chicago. The Eagle’s Nest Art Gallery has two Makielski paintings with this title. One of them, alternatively titled “Up the River,” was in the gallery dedication show in July of 1918. It is not clear which painting is which.
