Library Assistant
Starting salary: $15-$16
Part-time, 10-12 hours per week. Evenings and some weekends required.
The Oregon Public Library District is seeking to fill the position of Library Assistant. The ideal candidate has knowledge of general library operations, can work the circulation desk, and assist patrons with makerspace equipment, readers’ advisory, and reference inquiries. This position also requires assisting patrons with technology.
Duties:
- Work the circulation desk, check library materials in and out and fulfill holds for library patrons.
- Register patrons for library cards, verify and enter data into the integrated library system.
- Accept payment of fines for lost and/or damaged materials.
- Handle routine complaints, directing patrons to the appropriate staff member.
- Assist patrons in the use of library equipment as needed.
- Inspect incoming materials for damages and handle according to in-house procedures.
- Maintain a tidy and well-organized circulation area.
- Assist in accurate shelf reading and re-shelving of materials.
- Collaborate on library-wide projects as needed.
- Attend routine meetings for the coordination of library programs, collections, and services as needed.
- Participate in professional development and networking activities both online and in person.
- Assist with other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Experience: 1-3 years of library experience in a public library desired.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; LTA highly desired.
- Skills: Microsoft Office, email, research, familiarity with web-based searching and applications, knowledge of general library operations. The ideal candidate is comfortable working with the public and understands the importance of teamwork in a small, rural library.
Physical Demands:
Individuals may need to sit or stand for extended periods. Manual dexterity to manipulate library materials required. Reaching above shoulder heights, below the waist, or lifting as required to file documents or store materials throughout the workday. Ability to do repetitive tasks with speed and accuracy. Employees may need to carry, push, pull, or lift up to 50 pounds.
